I've been disgusted with President Bush's "War on Terror" in Iraq for a long time. After reading the books From Beirut to Jerusalem and Against All Enemies, both of which I would highly suggest, I'm even more disgusted with the appaling lack of intelligence in our military endeavors over the past two years. It's sad. The war in Iraq has dramatically hurt our credibility, stretched our resources, cost us lives and money, and allowed Al-Qaeda to spread and grow across the globe. Its made little or no sense. Or, as Dick Clarke put it, "That's like invading Mexico after Pearl Harbor."
Normally I don't wax poetic about my political beliefs, but a few recent headlines caught my eye and made me sigh. In no particular order:
Report: al-Qaida Ranks Swelling Worldwide
AP: Terrorists Planning Summer Attack
Abuse of Captives More Widespread, Says Army Survey
A Routine Burst of Chaos Leaves a G.I. Wounded
These headlines are becoming all too common. Whats more, the reasons behind these headlines were predicted years ago. If you read "From Beirut to Jerusalem", the author describes the mindset of the Arab world perfectly. It explains why these events occur, why the people think and the way they do, and if we want to dictate some sort of policy in the region, how we should go about doing it. Its a fucking guidebook for Christ's sake, and we've done everything ass-backwards from what it suggests, with the predicatable results. As he'd put it, they're playing with Hama rules and we don't understand the game.
And then there's "Against all Enemies". He predicted that the war in Iraq would drive Al-Qaeda underground, that eliminating the leadership of Al-Qaeda without destroying the camps and the infrastructure would only create a multi-headed beast that would be embedded in our country, Europe, and the rest of the world, and guess what? Its looking like it happened.
Way to fight the war on terror. Attack a country with only one terrorist act against us, that was prevented in 1993. I'm not defending Saddam - lord knows the man was a butcher and a tyrant. But Christ, couldn't you have waited to win one war before you went storming off on another one?
Fucking Jeezus.
