The great thing about living in a place for an extended period of time is that you learn the places you like and you have people that you know that will go to these places with you. For me, it was the Doghouse, a seedy bar that was always dimly lit, all wood, and served only beer and pickled eggs. It was fantastic. The usual crowd was always there, the leftovers from the coffee shop after it shut down, the random frat boy or two, a few old crusty types, maybe a half-drunk professor and a few half-drunk grad students, the locals, and the few undergraduates that were either too socially misfit to find the meat market attractive or too stupid to realize that the Doghouse wasn't the meat market.
The best part about it was that there was always a wingman available to be there with me - pretty much any day of the week. Now, however, I find myself in the unenviable position of being the Maverick without a Goose - or even a Merlin for that matter. Or maybe I'm the copilot looking for my Iceman - who knows. Either way, you can't sing "You've lost that loving feeling" without that guy next to you, able to set the girls up.
Fuck, at this point I'd take someone to just sit at the same table as me.
Honestly - I needed to get out, but this was the shortest bar trip I've had in a long while, and the saddest. Plus, USC won - and I hate USC.
